Have you checked the largest moving object in your home? It's the garage door, and according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, garage door accidents account for finger injuries, amputations and sometime even death.

"Doors manufactured after 1991 must meet federally mandated standards that reduce the risk of injury,” Cecil McCord, CEO of Garage Doors of Indianapolis, says. "While that eases a lot of minds, there are simple steps you can take every day to safeguard your child --and pets-- even further.”

June is Garage Door Safety Month, but the following tips can be part of your safety plan all year long.

TEACH KIDS THAT GARAGE DOORS AND OPENERS ARE NOT TOYS
Take the time to remind your children that garage doors and openers are not toys. Make sure they understand the power and danger of the door. Set a few rules concerning garage doors:

KEEP OPENERS AND KEYPADS OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF REACH
In an age of remote controls, cell phones and computers, all buttons and keys are tempting. To reduce temptation, take a look to see that your wall-mounted openers are placed out of reach of children. Remote openers should be off-limits.

TAKE A TEST—WOULD YOU PASS OR FAIL?
Do you know how your garage door works? Especially in an emergency? Make sure the reversal mechanism works on your door. To do this, place a 2 x 4 on the ground underneath the open door. As the door reaches the wood, it should automatically reverse. If not, call for immediate service. Also, try the forearm test. As the door lowers, stick your arms out. The door should reverse when it feels this resistance.

NO POWER?
Make sure your door has an emergency manual release mechanism. In the event of a power outage you can control the door manually, potentially freeing someone or something trapped in the door.

If doors were installed prior to the '91 safety regulations, please call a garage door professional to assess your safety upgrade options.

Garage Doors of Indianapolis makes safety information available to all customers throughout the year. As part of Garage Door Safety Month, GDI will be offering special safety reminders to customers the first week of June. Safety demonstrations for groups can be scheduled by calling 317-989-0445.
