WINTER ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The garage door is the largest opening in your home, so it makes sense to check too see how energy efficient it is—or isn’t, especially if you heat your garage or if it is attached to your home.

First, look for obvious problems. Are their gaps around the outside of the door when it is closed? Does the bottom of the door fit properly to the floor? Is your door wooden? Or uninsulated steel? Any place that allows heat to escape leads to greater energy loss and ultimately greater costs.

Next, make sure the floor under the door is clean and free from debris for a good, tight fit when the door closes. Keep the door closed as much as possible, using a smaller entry door for walking traffic. Lubricate the door to keep it working well and moving freely.

If your garage doors are older with bigger gaps and greater problems, you might want to consider scheduling a tune-up. We can make sure that the tracks and jambs are adjusted properly. New weather-stripping can make a big difference for $60-140 or so depending on the door size. New perimeter seals can be installed ($90-150) or you can have your steel door insulated if it isn’t already. ($150-250).

If your door in is disrepair and you are considering garage door replacement, think about a high R-factor insulated door. The higher the R-factor, the higher degree of insulation and therefore, heat retention. Not only will it keep energy from escaping, it will make winter projects in your garage workshop more comfortable as well. Keep warm!
